The iconic Japanese restaurant is a popular Sydney haunt – now it’s giving you access to members-only tables.

 

Housed in a split-level heritage building, the flagship Saké Restaurant & Bar at The Rocks is an institution. It was one of Sydney’s first spots to offer a contemporary take on Japanese dining, melding age-old techniques with modern flavours. And to this day, it’s always heaving with eager diners looking for an unmatched sushi and sashimi fix.

 

The moody dining room – filled with brightly coloured sake barrels and intriguing Japanese artwork – will make you feel like you’ve been whisked away to Tokyo for the evening. Settle in by the bar or at a traditional sunken table and start with a Japanese wine, spirits, sake or umeshu.

 

The menu itself is a tribute to Tokyo, balancing washoku (traditional Japanese cuisine) with modern elements. The result? Innovative yet refined takes on classic dishes, where the attention to detail is unmatched. 

 

Our top picks from the menu are the nori crisps piled high with cubes of tuna and kingfish; the signature hiramasa kingfish dressed in coriander-infused ponzu, lime and jalapeno kosho; and the standout 250-gram Blackmore Wagyu scotch fillet with yakiniku sauce and oroshi ponzu.
