This celebrated wine bar is always booked out – now it’s giving you access to members-only tables.

 

When Monopole first opened in Potts Point in 2012, it changed the way we thought about wine bars. At the time, it was the first Sydney venue to truly give equal weight to its food (inventively reimagined French favourites) and the diverse and adventurous wines it served alongside it.

 

Since then, it’s moved – and brought new life – to the heart of the CBD. The space is light and airy, complemented by large white inflatable light fixtures and American blond oak tables and chairs.

 

Here you’ll find Brent Savage and his team (Cirrus, Yellow, Bentley) serving up modern takes on classic French bistro fare. Everything’s crafted with seasonal ingredients, with their brightness amplified to reflect the surrounds. At lunch you’ll find casual dishes such as herby cucumber salad and a signature prawn sandwich with yuzu mayo. Things are kept simple and unfussy at dinner time, but with a touch more elegance and a livelier ambience. 

 

Monopole certainly remains one of Sydney’s best spots for a glass of wine. The list comprises French and Australian wines curated by sommelier Nick Hildebrandt, including a number of nostalgic Aussie drops from the ’80s and ’90s, little-known producers and contemporary cult faves.

 

Our top picks from the menu are stracciatella topped with XO mushroom; wagyu steak, bordelaise sauce and fries; and steamed snapper with charred peas and horseradish sauce.
