This new French restaurant has been buzzy ever since it first opened – but now it’s giving access to tables every night.

The streets of Paris are lined with bustling old-school bistros, but they’re few and far between in Melbourne. Enter Smith St Bistrot, top chef Scott Pickett’s original take on just that.

Here, you’ll feel like you’ve stumbled upon something straight out of the backstreets of 1920s Paris. There’s romance everywhere, from the exposed-brick interior with fresh moss and antique mirrors to the gothic chandeliers and burgundy banquettes, which line the wall opposite the bar. There’s even a restored spiral staircase that leads to a palatial private dining room, with even more antique features.

Just like you’d expect from a classic bistro, this is an all-day and all-occasion destination. Perch at the bar with a classic Parisian cocktail (think dirty Martinis or French 75s) and a dozen oysters. Treat yourself to something a little more luxe, like a steak and a bottle of red, or even the caviar service (two varieties come with blinis and traditional garnishes). Or roll in for a top-notch late-night Wagyu beef burger.

Our top picks from the menu are vol-au-vent d’escargot (garlicky braised snails in puff pastry), oeufs mayonnaise (hard-boiled eggs and mayo topped with caviar); and roast beef with braised cos and Bordelaise sauce.

Every day of the week, Smith St Bistrot is giving us access to one of their best tables in the house, only available through Broadsheet Access.

Get a table for four at 12pm on Friday and Saturday or 5.30pm from Monday to Saturday.

You can book 30 days in advance of your desired booking date (with a minimum of two days prior).

Check out our other tables at Scott Pickett Group’s Chancery Lane, Matilda and Estelle.
