Raymond Tan’s rise from self-taught baker to Insta virality to owner of cult cakeshops Raya and Dua (and late-night dessert cafe Nimbo alongside his cousin) is built on inventiveness and artistry. As well as nostalgia for his Malaysian culinary heritage. 

 

It’s also full of sweet treats and good vibes, which the Melbourne-based cook shares generously in his newly launched debut book You’re Welcome, co-authored by Broadsheet Melbourne food and drink editor Audrey Payne. 

 

To celebrate the cookbook’s release, Tan and Payne are hosting an exclusive two-hour masterclass on Sunday June 14, and Broadsheet Access members are invited to join in the fun.

 

The one-off event takes place at Raya – the CBD bakery where it all began – where guests will enjoy a selection of four refreshments from You’re Welcome, thoughtfully prepared to bring the book’s pages to life. 

 

The intimate gathering also includes a live kueh demonstration, where Tan and Payne will share techniques, stories and insights into the making of traditional bite-sized Southeast Asian desserts. 

 

Then it’s on to an engaging Q&A session where guests will have the opportunity to ask questions, learn more about the inspiration behind the recipes, and connect over a shared love of food and culture. 

 

Copies of the book will also be available to buy on the day – and you might even be able to snag a signature or two from its authors to make your purchase extra special.
