Back for a second year, Volume sees ambitious and boundary-pushing musicians take over the former oil tank space at the Art Gallery of New South Wales. We’re giving away two-for-one tickets to this year’s opening headliner, ARIA-award winning Genesis Owusu.

 

Last year, the Art Gallery of New South Wales launched its inaugural live music series, Volume, with headliner Solange selling out two massive shows. This year, Volume returns with four headliners – André 3000, Sonic Youth’s founding member Kim Gordon, and Australian stars Tkay Maidza and Genesis Owusu.

 

Owusu first caught critics’ attention with his acclaimed debut album Smiling With No Teeth (2021), followed by his celebrated second album STRUGGLER (2023). The eclectic, ambitious album, which mixes post-punk, post-rap and R&B, won Album of the Year at last year’s ARIA Awards.

 

As the festival’s opener, Owusu will be performing two shows, on July 5 and 6 – with new music and a new visual arts-inspired performance, accompanied by his Black Dog Band featuring Kirin J Callinan, Touch Sensitive and drummer Timothy Commandeur.
