From the celebrated Australian director behind award-winning film Samson and Delilah, The New Boy is a beguiling story of survival and spirituality. Set in the 1940s, it follows a young Aboriginal boy who is sent to a remote monastery run by renegade nun Sister Eileen (played by Cate Blanchett). When the boy encounters a precious religious relic, a large carving of Christ on the cross, he becomes obsessed with the idea of Jesus. However, his Indigenous spiritual life – and an unusual secret power – is at odds with the mission’s Christianity. Faced with this threat, Sister Eileen must choose between her faith’s traditions and the truths embodied by the boy.
