The NGV will shine bright like a diamond this winter with its exclusive blockbuster Cartier show featuring nearly 400 extraordinary jewels, gems and glittering objects. The largest exhibition of the global jewellery house ever staged in Australia is this year’s Melbourne Winter Masterpiece – telling the story of the French luxury brand’s enduring legacy in art, design and craftsmanship.

 

Direct from London’s V&A Museum, Cartier showcases a dazzling selection of pieces owned and worn by the likes of Rihanna, Elizabeth Taylor, Princess Margaret, The Duchess of Windsor, Dame Nellie Melba, the Maharaja of Patiala and Begum Aga Khan III. Inside you’ll find hundreds of beautifully crafted jewels, tiaras, necklaces, brooches, watches, design drawings and more – often connected to royalty and Hollywood stars.

 

The exhibition runs June 12, 2026 to October 4, 2026. And Broadsheet Access members and Broadsheet subscribers can be among the first to see all the glittering sights with an exclusive after-hours tour on June 30.

 

Guests will enter through the gallery’s grand waterwall and be greeted by the Broadsheet team before hearing from Amanda Dunsmore — Senior Curator, International Decorative Arts & Antiquities, in conversation with Broadsheet’s editorial director, Katya Wachtel. Then they’ll make their way into the exhibition for a self-guided tour. (A great way to avoid day-time crowds as Access members will have the space to themselves for the evening.)
