Be the first to try a new neighbourhood wine bar from one of Melbourne’s most respected hospitality groups. At this one-off event, enjoy a spectacular feast by a chef with Michelin-star credentials and a Q&A with the founder.
Inside a converted warehouse in the backstreets of Cremorne, Lilac Wine is the latest venture from Nathan Toleman of the Mulberry Group. Toleman has long been a pioneer of Melbourne’s dining scene; he founded iconic brunch spots Top Paddock and Higher Ground before selling them to open top dining venues like Hazel and Dessous, and sustainable farm Common Ground Project.
Everything at this homely wine bar exudes warmth, from the roaring fireplace and exposed brick to the candlelit tables. But there will also be a great late-night vibe about it, with a disco ball and records spinning throughout the night. The menu – by Kyle Nicol (ex-Rascal), who has a Michelin-star background – takes inspiration from classic French bistro and nostalgic Aussie fare. It showcases woodfired cooking, fermentation, and a whole lot of creativity, with a focus on local and native ingredients (much of which Nicol forages himself).
You’ll be one of the first to experience Lilac when it opens exclusively to Access members for an Editors’ Preview night on Wednesday February 1 – days ahead of its official opening.
Start with a glass of bubbles before sitting down for a special three-course feast. The menu will be revealed on the night, but expect dishes such as chicken mousse eclairs; mince on toast topped with horseradish; and red wine egg with celeriac remoulade and eucalyptus. Plus, housemade cheeses and sourdough.
You’ll also have the option to purchase wines from Lilac’s 150-strong list, comprising eclectic drops from small-scale growers and producers which are carefully selected by head sommelier Richard Buck (ex-Aru). Or choose from an excellent selection of sake, beers and cocktails.
On the night, Broadsheet’s publications director Nick Connellan will host a Q&A with owner Nathan Toleman to hear about how Lilac came to life and is set to reinvigorate Cremorne’s dining scene.
There are limited spots, so be quick to reserve yours via the link below. Tickets are $70 per person.
Editors’ Preview nights are a chance to try highly anticipated restaurants before they open to the public alongside Broadsheet editors. Because the chefs are doing their thing for the first time, they’ve got a relaxed, beautiful chaos vibe about them.
The Editors’ Preview night at Lilac Wines takes place at 6pm on Wednesday February 1.
