South Melbourne is getting a new local gem – and Access members can be among the first to try it.

Our Editor’s Preview dinners are all about bringing diners to new venues. For our next instalment, we’re setting a more intimate scene, at new wine bar Kirbie, for an evening of shared dishes and topnotch wine.

Stepping inside, you may get a sense of deja vu. Kirbie (formerly James) is the latest iteration from Kirbie Tate. Leaving behind the Korean-Japanese-inspired menu, but keeping all the charm, this new wine bar is leaning into the UK-style caff – it’s a no-fuss, unpretentious eatery, fit to serve you from morning till night.

You’ll start your evening in the warm ambience of the space (with a complimentary drink in hand) before you pull up a chair for a set course of soon-to-be favourites. On the menu are starters, bistro-style mains with fresh sides, and dessert. Think dishes like chicken cotoletta, strip steak with “Kirbie butter”, and tortellini in brodo (broth) with a beef filling recipe passed on from a friend’s nonna. And for dessert, Tate is particularly excited to share the venue’s selection, including chocolate tarts, olive oil-drizzled lemon sorbet and a traditional galaktoboureko (a filo-wrapped Greek custard).

You can also expect to also hear from Tate herself, as she shares her insights with a Broadsheet editor.

Help us toast the arrival of Kirbie at an evening event fit for a European summer.
