The NGV has partnered with the British Museum to present Pharaoh, a landmark exhibition that celebrates three thousand years of ancient Egyptian art and culture. It will be the largest exhibition the British Museum has ever staged internationally. Escape the crowds with a private viewing during opening month, including bubbles and a Q&A with an NGV curator.  

 

Curated especially for the NGV by the British Museum, Pharaoh will see more than 500 ancient Egyptian artefacts displayed across the entire ground floor of NGV International. The exhibition will bring together monumental ancient Egyptian architecture, sculpture, jewellery and more – some of which have never been shown in Australia before. 

 

Many of the works will feature iconic pharaohs, such as the boy king Tutankhamun, and Khufu, builder of the Great Pyramid of Giza. Sculptures and statues will include the green siltstone head of Thutmose III and more than 10 sculptures dedicated to Sekhmet, the goddess of war and healing. 

 

There will also be a section dedicated to the skilled craftspeople who cut and decorated the royal tombs; a comprehensive display of Egyptian jewellery worn by pharaohs; and a display of funerary objects.  

 

To celebrate, Access members are invited to escape the crowds at a private, after-hours viewing of Pharaoh during opening month. Start in the gallery’s foyer, where you’ll be greeted with bubbles. You’ll then hear first hand insights from Dr Miranda Wallace, Senior Curator of International Exhibition Projects at NGV, over an intimate Q&A before exploring the exhibition at your own pace.
